University of Basel online survey of preschool German language proficiency

Client: University of Basel
Job: Developing a screen design that reflects the University of Basel’s corporate identity and implementing it in code.
Designing an appropriate structure for the questionnaire

Traditionally, manual questionnaires have been used to survey preschool children’s proficiency in German. Parents/guardians can now complete the survey online too. We imported the questionnaire into the survey tool LimeSurvey, structured it for optimal usability and tailored the design.

The survey is carried out by different local authorities in Switzerland, each requiring slightly different content. The name of the sender changes for each local authority, so the layout of the form needed to be adaptable. We optimised the user prompts and layout for desktop computers and for mobile devices and ensured that the finished product complies with the University of Basel’s design manual.

Iphone pattern

The questionnaire is published in 11 different languages – including languages with different character sets and right-to-left orientation. This made designing the user interface particularly challenging.
